Assumed: adult (26+), until you enter a birth year.
Model on your insurer’s premium letter
Not chosen: your insurer’s cheapest plan stands in until you choose. What each model asks you to do first. Standard: go to any doctor. Doctor or HMO: see your family doctor or group practice first. Telmed: call a hotline or use an app first (telemedicine). Flexible: you choose the first contact each time.
Deductible now, CHF a year
The deductible is the part of your medical bills you pay yourself each year. A higher deductible gives a lower premium.
Accident cover in your health insurance
Accident cover pays for the treatment of an accident. Choose No if you work at least 8 hours a week for one employer: their accident insurance covers you.
Kept in this browser. To show premiums, your browser asks our database for the canton, premium region, age class and accident cover; names, birth years and insurers stay here.

Your deductible
Your model
The benefits are the same in every model. A model trades a lower premium for a first point of contact. In an emergency you may always go straight to a doctor or hospital.
- Standard
- You may go to any doctor. Usually the highest premium.
- Doctor or HMO
- You see your chosen family doctor, a group practice (HMO), a doctor network or a pharmacy first, except in an emergency. From 2027 the FOPH lists these together.
- Telmed
- Telmed is short for telemedicine: you call a medical hotline or use an app first, except in an emergency. Each insurer sets its own rules.
- Flexible
- For each case you choose where to go first (for example a hotline, your doctor or a pharmacy), within the insurer’s rules.
Is your doctor on the list? In the Doctor or HMO and Flexible models you start with a practice from the insurer’s list, and a doctor may not take new patients. Choose your insurer in Your situation to see where to check.

Premium reduction
Cantons reduce basic-insurance premiums for people of modest means, and pay the reduction to the insurer; for families on low and middle incomes they must cut children’s premiums by at least 80% and those of young adults in training by at least 50% (FOPH fact sheet). We do not calculate reductions: the canton decides who qualifies and how much.

Switch by 30 November
- 1
Apply with the new insurer
At the same time as you cancel. It must accept you for basic insurance whatever your age or health. Apply on its own website, or with the FOPH’s sample letter.
Add an insurer with “+” in All insurers and its own website appears here.
- 2
Send the cancellation
By registered mail or A-Post Plus (priority post you can track). Use the letter below. The new insurer tells your old one that your cover continues.
- 3
A lower deductible or another model
Send the deductible-change letter below, also by 30 November. A higher deductible can still be asked for until 31 December; the FOPH recommends mid-December.
- 4
Keep your supplementary insurance
Until the new insurer has accepted you in writing. A supplementary contract is separate, and an insurer may refuse you or ask health questions.
- No open bills on 30 November
- A premium, co-payment or reminder still open on 30 November and unpaid on 31 December blocks the change.
- Written confirmation of cover
- Your old cover ends only when the new insurer tells the old one that your cover continues without a gap. Keep both insurers’ letters.
- Cost approval for regular medicines
- Ask the new insurer for cost approval (Kostengutsprache) before the change: it is not bound by your old insurer’s decision.

Dates and rules: FOPH, changing health insurer (priminfo.admin.ch), read 16.10.2026; Art. 7 of the health insurance law (KVG in German, LAMal in French).
Supplementary insurance
Supplementary insurance is a separate private contract: the insurer may refuse you, ask health questions and price by age, so keep it until the new insurer has accepted you in writing. Which insurers offer the supplement you want, and your own policies.
Questions people ask
Is basic insurance the same at every insurer?
Yes. The benefits of basic insurance are set by the federal health insurance law (KVG in German, LAMal in French) and are identical at every insurer, and every insurer must accept you for basic insurance whatever your age or health, with no waiting time. Premium, model and service differ.
Can I be left without cover when I switch?
No. Your old basic insurance ends only when the new insurer has told the old one that your cover continues without a gap (Art. 7 para. 5 of the health insurance law, KVG), and the new insurer must also tell you in writing.
Can I change insurer during the year?
Only in one case: if you are in the free-choice model with the ordinary deductible (CHF 300 for adults, none for children), a cancellation received by 31 March ends the insurance on 30 June and one received by 30 September ends it on 31 December. Moving from the free-choice model to a model with a first point of contact at the same insurer is possible at any time; any other change of model is made for 1 January.
What if my insurer raises my premium?
Insurers must tell you next year’s premium by 31 October, at least two months before it applies. You may then leave with one month’s notice to the end of the month before it applies, whatever your model: in practice by 30 November.
Does everyone in the family need their own contract?
Yes. There is no family policy: every person, child or adult, has their own contract, their own premium, deductible and model. A newborn or a person arriving in Switzerland must be insured within three months, and the cover is then retroactive.
Why does a plan have no comparison with last year?
A plan is compared only with the same plan last year: the same insurer and tariff, region, age class, deductible and accident cover. If the tariff is new or was renamed, or if your age class changes in the new year, no matching premium exists and nothing is shown rather than a guess. The model names changed for 2027, so they are not part of the match.
Where do the figures come from, and what does this page earn?
The premiums are the FOPH’s approved premiums from its open data, shown with the day they were read; the official calculator is priminfo.admin.ch. MEconomy receives no money from insurers, gives no quotes, passes on no data and links to insurers only to their own websites.
