Household · where to live

What is left over each month in every municipality

Tax, health insurance, electricity and other costs depend on where you live. Describe your household once and see what is left over of your income in every Swiss municipality, from official figures only. The map names what it leaves out.

FOPH premium year
–
ElCom tariff year
–

Left over: your gross income, less social contributions, income and wealth tax, health insurance, electricity, vehicle tax and rent, plus family allowances, in whole francs a year; each month is a twelfth. A place missing a part of it is grey. Income tax is an estimate, not tax advice.

Health insurance: FOPH, approved basic-insurance premiums, each person’s cheapest plan of any insurer and model at their deductible, times twelve. Premium regions: FOPH list. Informational only: no quotes, no commissions.

Electricity: ElCom tariffs, excluding VAT, for the chosen household profile; where several grid operators serve one municipality, the lowest is coloured and all are listed.

Family allowances: BSV (Federal Social Insurance Office), “Arten und Ansätze der Familienzulagen”; reprinting with attribution is permitted (“Nachdruck mit Quellenangabe gestattet”). Each child draws the higher rate of the cantons of the earners’ employers (the Family Allowances Act (FamZG), Art. 6, 7 and 12), the third and later children the from-third rate where the canton has one, oldest first. These are the cantons’ legal rates, which are minimums: an employer’s compensation fund may pay more. Not modelled: self-employed people and people not in work, and the higher child rate Vaud and Valais pay for under-16s already in post-compulsory training. Birth and adoption allowances are one-off and not in the yearly figure. It is income and is added to what is left over.

Vehicle tax: the cantonal laws for tax year 2026, for the car you pick, as the vehicle tax page works it out; it is subtracted from what is left over only when a car is in the household, and a canton whose law gives no figure for the car leaves that figure incomplete. An estimate: the road-traffic office’s bill decides.

Building insurance: the cantonal building insurers’ tariffs for 2026 (18 cantons and the district of Oberegg), for a residential building of solid construction at the insured value you enter, with the 5% federal stamp duty on the premium where the insurer adds it. Read 12.10.2026; each figure links its tariff. In GE, UR, SZ, TI, VS, OW and AI outside Oberegg private insurers cover buildings and publish no prices, and ECA Vaud, the canton of Vaud’s building insurer, publishes no building tariff: No data. An estimate from the official tariffs; the insurer’s invoice decides.

Not shown, because no open official figure exists per municipality: car insurance and household insurance. Rent is the figure you enter. Income and wealth tax: the cantons’ published tariffs and multipliers for tax year 2026, with the net wage from your gross pay and age, worked out with the Federal Tax Administration’s (ESTV) model rates for social contributions (including 0.4% non-occupational accident insurance, which is a model value, not your insurer’s rate). Pillar 3a counts as 0, and church tax is the one you choose. It is an estimate, not tax advice.
